Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Atlanta & Suwanee, Georgia

Are you feeling discomfort or pain in the back of your mouth? If so, it could be a sign that your wisdom teeth are causing problems. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, have the potential to create a wide range of issues if they do not emerge correctly. In certain cases, they may become impacted, which can lead to infections, damage to neighboring teeth, or even cysts or tumors. At Milestone Dentistry and Facial Aesthetics, we specialize in extracting wisdom teeth to address these concerns and improve your oral health.

Understanding Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25. They are located at the back of the mouth, near the entrance to the throat. These teeth can become impacted when there is not enough room for them to emerge properly. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, infection, damage to other teeth, and even cysts or tumors if left untreated.

Types of Impaction

There are three types of impaction based on the depth of the teeth within the jaw. Here are them:

Soft tissue impaction

In this type, the crown of the tooth has penetrated through the bone, but the gum is covering part or all of the tooth’s crown.

Partial bony impaction

This occurs when the tooth has partially erupted, but a portion of the crown remains submerged below the gum and surrounding jawbone.

Complete bony impaction

This involves the tooth being completely encased by the jawbone.

Why Your Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed

Wisdom teeth extractions are most commonly performed because of an active problem such as pain, swelling, decay, or infection, or as a preventative measure to avoid serious problems in the future. Leaving impacted wisdom teeth untreated can lead to a range of potentially harmful outcomes, including damage to nearby teeth, disease, infection, and tooth crowding.
