What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that removes or loosens a band of muscle tissue called the frenum. It is located beneath the tongue, on the inside of the lips, and on the floor of the mouth. When the frenum is too large, it can limit the movement of the tongue, causing a condition called ankyloglossia or “tongue tie”. A frenectomy is performed to remove the fold of tissue and restore the tongue’s full range of motion.

What Is a Frenectomy Used For?

A frenectomy is most commonly used to address ankyloglossia, or “tongue tie”. Infants with tongue ties may experience difficulty feeding, although this is uncommon. As a child grows, limited tongue mobility can also impact their speech and ability to stick out their tongue. In some cases, the frenum can pull on the child’s gum tissue, causing periodontal trouble. Adults who are getting dentures may also need a frenectomy if the position of the frenum interferes with the fit of the dentures.

Our Frenectomy Procedure

A frenectomy is a simple and straightforward procedure that is usually performed under local anesthesia. Our experienced oral surgeons will carefully make an incision in the frenum and remove the excess tissue. The wound is then closed using dissolvable stitches, and the area is allowed to heal.

Recovery time is typically short, and patients can usually resume normal activities the next day. It is normal to experience some soreness and swelling for a few days after the procedure, but this can be managed with pain relievers and ice packs.

Benefits of a Frenectomy

Although it may sound like a minor procedure, the benefits of a frenectomy can be significant and life-changing for some patients. Here are some of the benefits of a frenectomy:

Improved Tongue Mobility

By removing or loosening the frenum, a frenectomy can improve the range of motion of the tongue. This can lead to improved speech, better feeding habits, and better overall oral health.

Prevention of Periodontal Damage

When the frenum is pulling on the gum tissue, it can cause recession, or pulling away, of the gums. This can lead to further periodontal damage and tooth loss. A frenectomy can prevent this damage and improve the overall health of the gums.

Improved Smile Appearance

A frenectomy can also improve the appearance of the smile. When the frenum is pulling on the gums, it can create a gap between the teeth, or make the teeth appear more spaced out. By removing the frenum, the teeth can be brought together, creating a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

Proper Fit for Dentures

For adults who are getting dentures, a frenectomy can ensure a proper fit. If the frenum is pulling on the gum tissue, it can cause discomfort and irritation when wearing dentures. By removing the frenum, the dentures can fit properly and be more comfortable to wear.
