What is a Biopsy for Oral Cancer?

A biopsy is a procedure that involves taking a small sample of tissue or cells from the body to be examined under a microscope. In the case of oral cancer, a biopsy is the only way to get a definitive diagnosis. It is important to note that oral cancer can develop without any noticeable symptoms, which is why regular dental checkups and cancer screenings are crucial for early detection.

Why is Early Detection Important?

Oral cancer is highly treatable when detected early. In fact, the five-year survival rate for patients with early-stage oral cancer is over 80%. However, if cancer has spread to other parts of the body, the survival rate drops significantly. That’s why it’s so important to get a biopsy if you suspect you may have oral cancer.

How is a Biopsy Performed?

Our team of experienced oral specialists will work with you to determine the best biopsy method for your individual needs. Depending on the location and size of the suspicious area, we may perform a needle biopsy, an incisional biopsy, or an excisional biopsy. We will explain each type of biopsy to you, and make sure that you are comfortable with the procedure before we begin.
During the biopsy, we will use local anesthesia to numb the area around the suspicious tissue. We will then extract a small sample of cells or tissue for examination. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to complete, and you will be able to go home shortly afterward.
After the biopsy, we will send the sample to a pathologist for examination. The pathologist will examine the cells under a microscope to determine whether they are cancerous or not. If cancer is detected, the pathologist will also determine the type and stage of the cancer, which is crucial for creating an effective treatment plan.

What Happens After a Biopsy?

If the biopsy results indicate that you have oral cancer, our team will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan. Treatment may involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these methods.

If the biopsy results are negative, it’s still important to continue with regular dental checkups and cancer screenings. Oral cancer can develop at any time, so early detection is key to successful treatment.
